This was the workhorse of the Neolithic for the massive scale deforestation that took place across Britain. It is this type of axe that would have been most effective and it is therefore no surprise that so many are found broken or damaged. Smaller axes were made for woodland management such as coppicing, while the larger axes would have been used for tree felling.
